A co-ordinated interior design scheme for the 2 Phases of the £422million new UCLH facility that was delivered under a PFI initiative in the heart of Bloomsbury, London.

Medical facilities that were dispersed around Bloomsbury as part of the UCLH property portfolio were consolidated into one integrated site with more efficient, shared facilities.

The 17 storey tower & 4 storey adjacent podium building delivered 670 patient beds and several outpatients facilities. Working closely with our clinical planners & architectural teams at LDY, our client, the BCJV consortium and NHS committees, a highly integrated solution was delivered. Careful consideration was made to provide a facility that was clinically advanced whilst delivering a positive, healing environment.

“... In common with all PFI projects the UCLH development was marked by the speed with which the design had to be carried out and the challenges associated with the consultation processes necessary to obtain approvals from various department heads, clinical staff and other stakeholders.

In this context it was always envisaged that achieving an efficient and successful interior design scheme would be fraught with difficulties particularly given the wide range of interested parties and subjective attitudes to the design.

By common consent, the Designers exceeded the Team’s expectations in the manner with which they mastered the brief, managed the expectations and preferences of the Client team, and delivered a universally respected interior design scheme.

From the beginning, the Designers had a clear vision for the interior design of the hospital and they managed, through a lengthy series of consultations, presentations and submissions, to deliver that vision in a timescale commensurate with the stringent demands of the budget and the programme. They understand the need to work within budgets and programmes and were proactive in proposing design solutions that delivered maximum creative effect within imposed constraints.”
